Preferred route

While there are many ways to get to Dénia, one tried-and-true way is:

Fly to Madrid

Connect to Alicante (1 hr)

Drive to Dénia in a rental car* or hire a private car with a driver through your hotel (1 hr)

*It is very easy to drive around Spain, just remember to specify if you want automatic or manual since most cars are manual transmission

Other Routes

Fly to Madrid → connect to Valencia (1 hr) → rent a car or hire a private car with a driver through your hotel (1 hr) or take the bus (1.5 hrs) to Dénia

Fly to Barcelona → connect to Valencia (1 hr) or Alicante (1 hr) → rent a car or hire a private car with a driver through your hotel (1 hr) or take the bus to Dénia (the fastest are under 2 hours from Valencia or Alicante)

Fly to Madrid → take the high speed AVE train to Valencia (1 hr 45 min) or Alicante (2 hrs 15 min) → rent a car or hire a private car with a driver through your hotel (1 hr)

Fly to Madrid or Barcelona → rent a car and drive to Dénia (4 hrs) - there are many fun day trips along the way if you want to break up the trip

Fly to a major city in Europe → connect to Alicante or Valencia → rent a car, hire a private car with a driver, or take the bus to Dénia

Passports

Make sure to check your passport to see if it needs to be renewed (this normally takes 6-8 weeks). In order to enter the country your passport must be valid for 6 months after you return from Spain.

Packing Reminder

Bathing suit and cover up

Sandals or “rock shoes” ( many of the best beaches are beautiful rocky ones)

Clothing for wedding events: Events + Attire

For US guests: an adapter to plug in electronics (except ones that create heat like blow dryers or straighteners!)

Tranportation

The welcome dinner, beach day, rehearsal dinner, and wedding will have transportation provided to and from Hotel Les Rotes, Hotelet La Raconà, Hotel Palau Verd, and Hotel Costa Blanca.

There is no Uber or Lyft in Dénia.

The taxi number is 965 78 65 65. You can also ask your hotel or restaurants to call for you.

Buses are very reliable and convenient. Here is the schedule.

Renting a car

You can rent a car in any city or directly in Dénia. Booking in advance often means a better deal.

If you are a US citizen you will need to get an international driver's license. You can do this through AAA before you leave for your trip.

Specify if you would like a manual or automatic transmission when booking a rental car.

Most rental cars have navigation (these can be easily switched to English).

Know what type of fuel your car needs. Most rental cars use Diesel or 95/98 gasoline. Price for gasoline is shown in liters (roughly 4 liters are in a gallon).

Some helpful legal things to know: talking on your phone while driving is illegal, you can only pass cars in the left lane, DUI laws are extremely rigid, and everyone in the car must wear a seat belt.

Common speed limits: 120km/h (72mph), 100km/h (60mph), 90km/h (54 mph), 50kmh (30 mph)

Don’t leave luggage or valuables visible in your car.

Roundabouts - Spain is full of them! Yield to cars already in the roundabout just like in the US.

Buying things

Gratuity is already included in restaurant bills. There is no need to leave additional gratuity. If you'd like you can leave small change or roundup (ex. your bill is €47 euro so you leave €50).

If paying with a credit card you will sometimes pay with a handheld electronic device. You will be asked if you want to pay in euros or dollars. We recommend picking euros to avoid excess fees.

Tell your bank and your credit card companies you are traveling abroad so you can easily use your cards without interruption.

ATMs are plentiful. There is no need for traveler's checks or ordering euros in the US. Just hit up an ATM when you arrive.

Cell phones

Your cell phone won’t work normally in Spain. You can purchase an international plan for the trip. Verizon, for example, has a deal of $10/day on days you use it to access your existing US plan. If you have an unlocked phone (non-iPhones only), you can buy a Spanish SIM card; if this is confusing, don’t worry about it!

You can always get by putting your phone on airplane mode and using wifi (available in most hotels and restaurants). You can use Whatsapp for texts with other Whatsapp users and buy Skype credit to make international cards.

Renting a house

Airbnb, VRBO, Homeaway, etc. are also great options. Here is a map that shows where a rental would be most convenient in relation to where the wedding and rehearsal dinner are.
